BBC Introducing Artists to play at Wychwood Music Festival

The Wychwood Festival has partnered with BBC Introducing to provide a unique platform for emerging artists by renaming a stage at the annual event.

The partnership will see Wychwood’s third stage rebranded as the BBC Introducing in Gloucestershire stage, and will invite the six counties that border Gloucestershire to submit bands that they endorse to play on it.

The annual festival takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse from Friday, 4 June, to Sunday, 6 June, 2010.

BBC Introducing shows from BBC Radios Oxford, Bristol, Wales, Coventry & Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Hereford & Worcester and, of course, Gloucestershire will each submit ten bands to a judging panel.

The panel will consist of BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 1′s Bethan Elfin, The Independent newspaper’s music critic Elisa Bray and Wychwood’s Festival Director Graeme Merrifield who will pick the final line-up of 28 bands from the 70 submitted.

The partnership is the first time that a number of regional BBC Introducing outlets have joined forces to provide a unique platform for emerging artists by giving them a direct route to BBC Introducing at a national level, via the judging panel, and an opportunity to be included in the line-up of one the UK’s leading festivals.

BBC Radio Gloucestershire’s Introducing presenter Rob Champion said: “We’re so happy to be working with the Wychwood Festival as well as our colleagues from the six bordering BBC regions on such an innovative partnership.

“I can’t think of a better opportunity, not only for our up and coming artists in Gloucestershire, but for those in the wider area.

“Wychwood is a big deal for local bands here, it represents a major achievement to play at such a prestigious, vibrant and eclectic festival and I can’t wait to be there!”

The ten Gloucestershire artists and bands that could now be performing at Wychwood are: Zen Elephant, Aspen Sails, Charlie Baxter, Divine Secret, Elliot Withers, Jim Lockey & the Solemn Sun, Lounge Fly, Roving Crows, The Echoes and Young Vinyls.

The final line-up of 28 bands over the three days as decided by the judging panel will be announced soon.

Alex Calise – Break Me mp3

alexx calise Alexx Calise

Crunchy, angsty, and unique.

“Throw your words at me, I’ll have my way with them,” mocks young and sharp-tongued singer, guitarist and songwriter, Alexx Calise.

Delivering a sound that is both fresh and uniquely her own, Calise combines hard rock, electronica, and urban-edged pop with crunchy guitars, angsty lyrics, and an instantly identifiable vocal that is hauntingly beautiful and completely raw all at once.

Calise grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she spent her childhood mostly alone or in the pages of a notebook, finding comfort only in her parents’ vast record collection, which included everything from Mozart to Led Zeppelin. At 11, she picked up the guitar to emulate her father, also a talented musician, and began fusing the melodies she heard in her head with her own poetry and recitations.

Now living in Los Angeles, California and continuing along the same path, Calise is endorsed by over 13 music gear/clothing manufacturers, she has appeared in several national TV commercials, shows and special programs (including the Discovery Channel documentary, “The Science of Sex Appeal”), and she has been featured in Blender magazine, Guitar World, and the how-to/method book, “How to Succeed as a Female Musician” alongside such notable musicians as Lisa Loeb and The Donnas. Her music is in heavy rotation on MTV/VH1 Networks, and on thousands of radio stations internationally. Most recently, Alexx’s song, “Morning Pill” was used in a One Tree Hill promo, she appeared as the lead guitarist for a Disney Imagineering DVD about soundwaves, and she was featured on Boston’s #1 Hit Station, Kiss 108 FM as a “hot up-and-coming indie artist.”

Calise has just released her 2nd album, In Avanti, a high energy “rocktronica” collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer, Luigie Gonzalez. Immediately following will be her debut album with other music project, Sound of Cancer (with accomplished drummer/songwriter, Dennis Morehouse).

A Soft Spot for Acoustic

What is it that draws someone to the sound of acoustic singer songwriters? It is definitely a sound like no other.

Is it the raw vulnerability that that the song offers? Perhaps it’s the pure sound that allows no frills, no editing, no falseness. All I know is I like it.

Here’s 5 songs to wet your appetite for acoustic guitar, ranging from well known hits to those lesser known and even a couple of guys in their bedroom covering a classic. Enjoy:
