Intrepid Fox Flyer Feb 20121 356x500 SED Records Free Gig in Soho, London

London based independent record label SED Records UK return once again with their free-entry rock nights at Soho’s top rock venue, The Intrepid Fox, in full force on Thursday 23rd February 2012 to showcase the UK’s best up and coming young rock bands. If you have previously been to an SED Records night you will know how fantastic the nights have been with hot young talent from all over the UK rocking the joint. There is a stellar line-up with three great bands. Headlining the night is SED Records signed hard rock outfit Hornet. All About The Rock said “Hornet are like are a shot in the arm – an injection that you’re going to want on a regular basis” and as always main support comes in five-star rating this time from London’s finest glam rock band Damn Dice and the Bournemouth based Western Sand who kick ass 70’s style.

Headliners Hornet are currently taking the music industry by storm and are causing a huge stir in the rock ‘n’ roll honey pot! Rockindustry.co.uk who reviewed the young upstarts at their last show said “These boys are something special and there’s just no stopping the buzz getting louder” and with London’s Big In The Game Magazine recently saying; “In their time The Sex Pistols had revolutionised the music industry in a way never seen before. It is my belief that Hornet will do the same, all that’s left is to see their influence spread. Need I say any more?” You know the Hornet boys are on to something big!

Glasswerk said; “It’s Like witnessing Nirvana, The Sex Pistols and Black Flag and the crowd here is lucky enough to catch the band in intimate surroundings, clearly aware that they are witnessing something very special indeed. ‘Outta Control’, ‘Second Hand Smoke’ and ‘Rock n Roll Riot’ already sound like classics. The bands rise to superstardom depends on one thing – whether a major label has big enough balls to take on this rock leviathan.”

Main support comes from Damn Dice, who are an emerging new band from London who are fully equipped with a high energy, powerful and hard rock sound injected with an exciting stage presence that matches their glamorous image of four, long haired, sexy glam rockers who are dressed to kill. At the end of 2011 Damn Dice managed to scoop the main support slot with the legendary L.A Guns and supported them on a 17 day tour across the United Kingdom and Europe. Damn Dice focus on the lighter side of life, such as sex, partying and having a wild time and with no room for negativity Damn Dice perceive rock music as an expression of positive energy and these lads boldly sing “Life is a gamble. We play to win. Roll the damn dice, never lose” so whether you’re into gambling or not I can guarantee that Damn Dice are a safe bet and will blast The Intrepid Fox away!

Opening the evening are the talented Western Sand, who are an exciting, no bullshit, balls-out-of-the-bath, four piece southern hard rock revival group hailing from, Bournemouth, Dorset. With high ambitions the guys from Western Sand intend on

putting rock ‘n’ roll back on the map and after forming in 2008 Western Sand are becoming Dorset’s most exciting new rock band, earning a strong reputation after performing countless shows around Bournemouth and Southampton. Relentless gigging has landed the band headline shows at The Joiners as well as supporting The Treatment, Jettblack, Voodoo Six and Heaven’s Basement. So if you don’t mind getting sand between your toes then make sure you catch these guys live in the city because they might just cause a sand storm…

The last two SED Records shows had rockers crammed into the venue like battery hens so make sure you get down to the venue early enough to avoid disappointment of not being able to get in! Doors will be opening at 8pm so make sure you get down to The Intrepid Fox in Soho on Thursday 23rd February 2012 it’s an evening not to be missed!

Sax Appeal with Tasty Riffs

Cool solo riffs with some unusual instruments playing the blues, like steel drums and other percussion, made this a great evening. The powerful female vocalist sang some atmospheric, gutsy blues.

Juicebox Live returns to the capital for a special show, we have found a venue that is situated within the buzzing hub of Indie music on a Friday night, situated next to Mornington Crescent tube station, walking distance to Euston, and next to the iconic KoKo. We are also delighted to have out together a storming night of live music, followed by great DJs playing tunes that will keep you dancing all night!

The Uppercuts

Since forming in early 2009 The Uppercuts from North London have set about creating their own sound, this unique sound and writing style is made up of a mix of Punk, Ska, Oi and Indie. For the last year they have been working on writing songs for an album due to be recorded at the end of 2010. Currently playing shows around the UK the Uppercuts have played alongside bands such as The Exposed (Warped Tour 2010), Glastonbury Veterans La Rebla Fam and punk legends King Kurt. In this short period of time The Uppercuts have drummed up a lot of interest on the punk scene.

The Expensive Habits

The (Expensive) Habits are a band from Hemel Hempstead, that formed in 1999, and after having a short hiatus are now back gigging and after hosting their own Xmas SOLD OUT Xmas special, this is will be their first gig of 2012, and with new songs as well as the classics from their debut album they are back and better than ever.

The Wholls

Coined “Urban Indie”, if you get down to see these guys you can expect a lively, hectic night and a set of original bangers with a few surprises chucked in! Live favourites such as ‘Rollin’ & ‘B-Man’ are already fast becoming a cult smash and reasons alone to check them out.

The Theme

The Theme are South London fusion of Brit-Pop and post-Punk Modrock! This is not sixties flower-power, it’s hard-hitting rock music in the best traditions of Mod-Revival Powerepop.

We will have our resident ‘Supersonic DJs’ and be inviting some special guests to DJ on these nights too. DJs will play a range of music from the 50′s right up until now so expect to hear the likes of:

Arch 1 New Year and Beyond

Band 1 450x253 Arch 1 New Year and Beyond

I opened the mysterious-looking metal door…behind which was a curtain opening out into a compact little club that feels like someones front room.

The band played blues, many classics, but what was really amazing was that many of the musicians were multiskilled, the bassist also created a stunning laser lighting concept and handled smoke machines. One of the guitarists also sang and then went on to play some stunning riffs on a sax. The owner sings and also
works the bar and so it goes on. The quality of the music was a good blend of classic blues, the musicans were of an excellent calibre and it was enjoyable to watch in such an intimate atmosphere, created very individually by both the architecture of
being under an arch and also the interesting decor. Its very cosy, unpretentious and entry was free, drinks were reasonably priced and tea and coffee are served there.

Tucked away just round the corner from Star Lane DLR, this is one of Londons largely undiscovered hidden treasures. This venue also has regular events such as jam sessions and lots of other stuff going on throughout the year.

The Red Inspectors are Miles Chapman, Andy Lewis, Pete Twyman and Alex Richards. Andy Lewis came to the attention of the wider world as Blur’s tour DJ and the main man behind the Blow Up club nights in Camden Town that triggered the Brit Pop scene in the 1990s. Starting out with Pete and Miles as bass player in Pimlico, he later joined indie scene stalwarts Spearmint and has been Paul Weller’s bass player since 2007. He has released a number of solo recordings, and has collaborated with some legendary vocalists including Keni Burke, Reg King, Loleatta Holloway and Jess Roberts.

Alex Richards is a keyboard player of some renown. Touring extensively with Mohair and The Bluetones, he has also been on many recordings and has an instinctive flair for the Hammond organ.

red inspectors Gig: The Red Inspectors plus Guests

Pete Twyman has been writing songs for as long as he can remember. He plays guitar, keyboards and drums, and has a gift for discovering interesting chords. With plenty of live experience with Pimlico, Thurman, The Four Stories and Paul Weller’s band, Pete’s got a great ear for detail and is in demand as a mastering engineer.

Miles Chapman has been playing drums since the age of 11. He’s a regular performer and session player, and has been a musical collaborator with Andy and Pete since 1988.

The Red Inspectors was born out of a love and admiration for the music of the early Acid Jazz bands- Corduroy, Mother Earth, The James Taylor Quartet, Jamiroquai and The Brand New Heavies. Their debut album Are We The Red Inspectors? Are We? Was written and recorded earlier in 2011 and is a cheeky 21st Century mixture of Hammond Organ, detective TV theme tunes, easy listening, porn soundtrack, cocktail lounge, bossa-nova and electro-funk pop tunes. Between them, Pete, Miles, Andy and Alex play drums, percussion, bass, guitar and a variety of keyboards. They also occasionally sing.

Having found its natural home on the label that had such an influence on their musical development, Acid Jazz records is proud to release the debut release from The Red Inspectors to co-incide with their 25th anniversary in January 2012.

The Surface Festival 2012

In 2012 the Surface Festival is back and bigger than ever: we are organising over 500 shows across 14 cities in the UK and Europe. Shows will take place in London, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, Birmingham, Nottingham, Oxford, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Barcelona, Seville and Berlin.

58563 116188601768493 110393645681322 95439 1946493 n The Surface Festival 2012

The climax of the Festival will culminate with 32 bands playing the IndigO2 at the O2 Complex – a venue which has seen acts such as Jools Holland, Timbaland, Joss Stone and Estelle to name a few. Leon Van Den Broecke, U.K. manager, explains “Surface gives bands the chance to play the type of venues that most bands only dream of when they’ve ‘made it’ – add to the expertise Surface offers in terms of lighting and sound management, PR and exposure and you’re looking at an opportunity and experience that’s too good to miss”.

The main focus of a band should be live performance. The sweaty, loud and beer saturated venues across Britain are where bands are born and it’s this aspect that the Surface Festival is focused on keeping alive. Other venues Surface will be using include the O2 Academy Main stage in Birmingham and Bristol, the Dome in London, the Manchester Academy and Oxford Academy. Nights are set out by genre providing opportunities for bands and artists to gain exposure from new audiences, sell merchandise, promote networking opportunities and attract new fans. For a list of testimonials from bands that have played the Surface Festival check the website.

The Surface Festival works in association with 24 international sponsors that cover all bases for a band. “Marshall Amplification are extremely excited to be working with the Surface Festival for 2012. This event is truly inspiring for all involved” – Marshall Amplification. For a further list of sponsors see the website.

With a prize pot of £100,000 including a slot at Sziget Festival 2012, Monkey Week and a U.K. and European tour bands and artists get the opportunity to progress further in the music industry. “The prizes offered for the winning band and runners up are just fantastic and the experience all the bands gain from playing larger venues is priceless” – Alex Baker; Kerrang Radio Unsigned show. For a full run down of the 2012 prizes please see the website.

Surface Festival takes bands at grass roots level and brings them through a journey culminating in an industry showcase. The quality of the sponsors, judges and management lends colossal credibility to this event and should be a breath of fresh air to all bands and artists in the UK. In an uncertain time, where longevity and sustainability is rare in today’s music industry the Surface Festival can be exemplified as a solid force for good, offering some amazing opportunities to bands. Working together with key industry bodies and organizations is paramount to developing a model that is fair for everyone – the promoters, the venues, the fans and most importantly the bands taking part and the experience and value they get from playing the live shows.

“Surface has been an awesome experience for us as a band, it’s pushed us as performers but has also helped developed the business side of the band. The best thing about Surface is it’s an honest process, it doesn’t claim to turn you into rock stars overnight or at all, instead it gives you the confidence, the experience and ultimately to the winners the tools to make a success of the band yourselves. We’ve enjoyed every second of the competition, developed good relationships with other bands and people within the industry and we hope now we can keep that going. We would recommend Surface to any band out there: realistically we would have never had the chance to play such iconic venues as Cardiff’s Coal Exchange or the IndigO2, through this we have and we can’t thank everyone that has supported us enough, especially the fans who have voted and the Surface Festival crew.” Blackwaters.
