The Music Mag | Music Blog in the UK, featuring Unsigned Music

BBC 6 Music, 10th Birthday, Queen Elizabeth Hall, London

If it sometimes feels like an entire channel has been built to replace, in elephantine form, the diversity of a typical John Peel show, its DJs do mostly share Peel’s deference to the music he played, and sense of educative mission. The slightly dull worthiness this implies also allows for dissent and genius, meaning John Lydon’s PiL headline this celebratory gig.

Beth Jeans Houghton begins in a mostly empty hall, and finishes with a speeding punk flourish. Anna Calvi is sheathed by a tight skirt, body restrained as her mouth yawns wide for “Desire” and she theatrically plucks a guitar, exploring the space between Jimmy Page and Duane Eddy. But she’s bashful between songs, not lost in them.

Graham Coxon bounds on, his good humour explained by the fine pop music from his upcoming album, AE. “Running For Your Life” has Denim’s glam-rock thuggishness, with a chorus that skids downhill. Gruff Rhys follows, with quizzically yearning acid-pop, Cerys Matthews duetting on “Spacedust No. 2”.

This increasingly entertaining music has been made by mostly diffident people not burning with charisma, a perpetual indie fault. John Lydon cures that. Wearing what looks like Sam Spade’s battered brown anorak and peering at us through spectacles, his latest version of PiL make the night’s toughest, most inescapable sound. “This Is Not A Love Song” is remade as dark disco, sung by a man finally taking pleasure in his work, newly sober from his old self’s turmoil. But after he has thrown out images of a cursed England lit by “the spirit of ‘68” on “Albatross”, he derides the crowd’s “sad sacks” for insufficient response. A new song praising last year’s rioters shows his sympathies remain with teenage anarchy. “Rise” then brings such tensions to life and the crowd to its feet, where they wash against the South Bank’s unusually officious security, a fan waving his walking stick like a weapon on the stairs as John Cale howls with happiness in the stalls. “Anger is an energy”, Lydon sings, waking us with it, and reminding what radios can play.

Tips for downloading music online

You will come across most people looking for entertainment online, whether it is to play online casino game or listen to music or watch movies. Music has an important place in our lives. It is really very soothing to listen to our favorite music and relax.  Thanks to the permeation of web, we can now download our favorite music anytime anywhere or even it right on the browser. Just go online and you will come across millions of sites promoting music and are a big favorite with fans of music.  It is common to see music lovers downloading music from their favorite sites.

But the recent years have seen plenty of confusion when downloading music from online. There are many sites from where it is perfectly legal to download music but at some sites it is not. These steps are taken in order to curb piracy you will find plenty of forums where different artists and fans voice their opinions on the issue. These efforts and rising awareness is bound to lead to an exciting future for digital music. There is roughly the same interest amongst people looking for casino prizes as well as online music.

But still a lot more needs to be done in this field. Ask anyone and you won’t find clear answers as to the clear rules and regulation regarding downloading music from the web. While some are strictly against it, others may just shrug and say why not? The extreme popularity of downloading music has led to MP3 format that makes the music files very light and small in size They make it easier to download the songs and music within a couple of minutes. These files can be stored on your pc or pendrive without easting much of the space.

The truth is that technology is getting wiser. The record labels are keeping a constant vigil on illegal downloading and sue people with heavy charges if caught. No longer can you fool the technology. But always download music from a legitimate site and keep away from the illegal ones. Remember that many governing bodies are fighting these illegal practices and to curb the piracy of music, that is leading to millions of dollars of losses to the artists and record companies.  Just like you are careful about getting the best casino bonuses, be very careful as to from where you are downloading the music.

Advantages of Bands Selling Out?

BB6 Music posted an interesting podcast regarding what is selling out for bands. Credit to them for this:

Nice work if you can get it. With music sales no longer a stable source of income, bands and artists are saying “yes” more than ever to corporate branded gigs and private parties.

It’s a lucrative business with some acts charging as much as £1 million for a show.

Starting with Groove Armada, who were once signed to Barcardi’s record label, Adrian Larkin takes a trip into the world of corporate gigging.

Wizard Festival, Aberdeenshire

Organisers of this year’s Wizard Festival, held at New Deer, Aberdeenshire, have announced a clutch of top class acts have been added to the bill.

wizard%20logo Wizard Festival, Aberdeenshire

Sandi Thom, Proud Mary, The Dykeenies, Kid British and The Dangleberries have all been added to the main stage line up.

Hip Parade, The Draymin and Root System have all been confirmed to play the festivals second stage, the Banshee stage.

The festival, now in its fourth year, is held on August 27 & 28, over the bank holiday weekend.

Local lass Sandi Thom will be performing on Wizard’s main stage. Thom, born and raised less than 20 miles from where the festival is held, will be showcasing her new blues album ‘Merchants and Thieves’ to local fans for the first time at Wizard.

Kid British will be making a first ever appearance in the North-East of Scotland when they play Wizard’s main stage. Described as a ’21st century punky reggae party’ Kid British are guaranteed to get the party started with their raucous live show certain to set Wizard’s main stage on fire.

Proud Mary are one of the festival’s favourite acts, with fans demanding that the band return year after year. Showcasing their eagerly anticipated yet to be named third album, festival fans will be treated to an exclusive preview of new songs from this talented group of musicians some of whom will be flying in from Los Angeles especially for this show.

Following a storming set at Wizard in 2008, The Dykeenies will make a welcome return to the North-East’s only two day music festival this August. The Glasgow based four piece are sure to get festival goers grooving with their punchy pop melodies.

These acts join an already impressive line up including Happy Mondays, James, Alabama 3, Pearl and the Puppets, Complete Stone Roses and the Peatbog Faeries. Top Glasgow DJ’s SLAM have also been confirmed to headline the festival’s dance tent on Saturday August 28th. More headline DJ acts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Hip Parade will be playing at Wizard following a summer of storming main stage sets at festivals across the UK. Root System will be bringing their unique mix of ska, techno and punk to Wizard’s main stage.

The Draymin, who hail from Fife, make their Wizard festival and indie fans are sure to enjoy this appearance by a band that have been tipped for greatness in 2010.

Bringing a touch of bagpipe rock to Wizard will be Scottish festival favourites The Dangleberries. This is a first ever appearance by the renowned 12 piece that uses bagpipes, guitars, drums and a tambourine to get fans dancing with a mix of Celtic cover versions and original material.

Roy Thain, Wizard festival director said:

‘We have added loads more top quality acts to the programme and many of them will be performing at Wizard for the first time so that is always very exciting. We think that we have put out our strongest line up ever this year and we are delighted that so many great bands are really keen to perform to festival fans in the North-East. One of the things that we are really passionate about is supporting up and coming acts from north of the border and so we have made a real effort to book as many young breaking Scottish acts as possible. Making the bill varied with lots of different genres of music opens the event up to as many fans as possible and we are convinced that this year’s line-up will attract music fans from across the UK and beyond.’

The organisers have also announced an online competition where festival fans have the chance to win a pair of weekend tickets.

Wizard festival is two day music, arts and cultural event that takes place each year just outside the ancient village of New Deer, Aberdeenshire. A family friendly event, the festival also runs a full two day programme of activities for children and young people.

Last year the festival attracted more than 4000 fans from across the UK and has trebled in size since its first ever outing in 2007.

Transport links to and from the festival have been increased this year with busses running from every major Scottish city as well as local routes. Visit the Happy Bus site for more information: http://www.happybus.co.uk/wizard-festival-c-111

Weekend Ticket – £70
Saturday Ticket – £45
