The Music Mag: Unsigned UK Music News, Reviews & Promotion
Deadmau5 has called Madonna an “idiot” after the singer apparently talked about drugs from the stage at Miami’s Ultra music festival. The Canadian superstar DJ/producer accused the Material Girl of “pandering” to fans of electronic dance music (EDM) and dredging up “the shit that really held EDM down for years”.
Madonna’s inquiry came as she introduced a festival set by the electro act Avicii. In it she referred to “molly” – street slang for ecstasy. “In my world, the words ‘music’ and ‘dance’ are not separated, OK?” the singer said. “I have a few questions for you … How many people in this crowd have seen molly? Are you ready to dance? Are you ready to sweat? Are you ready to make some noise? Are you ready for the next DJ, motherfuckers?”
The crowd roared, but deadmau5 – real name Joel Zimmerman – was not impressed. “Very classy there madonna,” he wrote in the first of several Facebook posts. “‘HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra.”
He went on to write: “That’s your big contribution to [electronic dance music]? Thats your big message to ultra attendies? hipsterspeak for looking for drugs?”
In a subsequent post on his blog, deadmau5 spelled out his frustration. “I’m not perfect,” he wrote, “but i do know that i am at the very least morally obligated not to blatantly inflict or advocate anything that’s detrimental to society, others health, etc … We’ve taken EDM so far in the past decade, so goddamned far. It really hurts me to see rampant ADVOCATION of extreme bullshit lifestyles.” Deadmau5 called on artists and fans to take responsibility for their actions. “If you can be pandered with MDMA references, then at least pander your own ass with a good sense of responsibility which will enable you to make the personal choices that are right for YOU.”
Yesterday, Madonna made an attempt at reconciliation. During a Twitter QA Madonna was holding to promote her new album, deadmau5 tweeted her: “You’re a role model to 100′s of millions. You have a powerful voice, EDM could use your positive influence, not ‘molly’ talk.” Madonna responded by tweeting an old picture of herself wearing Mickey Mouse ears, captioned: “From one mouse to another, I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called Have You Seen Molly written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album.” Deadmau5 replied: “Fair enough, i was just voicing my concerns as i usually do. +1 respect for clearing it up personally.”
Madonna has been courting controversy with her new LP, MDNA, which comes 28 years after the furore over Like a Virgin. Besides the wink and nod of the album title, her risqué new music video has garnered an 18+ rating on YouTube. “I’m supposed to be a girl gone wild in the video!” Madonna chirped in an interview with Jimmy Fallon. “How could you go wild and not grind?”
